Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, has contributed to the acquisition of three properties adjacent to Cerro Castillo National Park in Chilean Patagonia, which will be donated to the Chilean state in a few years. This purchase allows the launch of the ambitious National Huemul Corridor.
Tompkins Conservation has acquired three properties in Las Horquetas, a high priority conservation area of 670 hectares. This new territory constitutes a natural/wildlife corridor for huemul deer between Cerro Castillo National Park and an important wintering ground for the species in the northern sector of the park. Until now, the area was the main entry point for illegal cattle in the park and presented various threats to the huemul deer, such as wild dogs.
The grant from Arcadia will enable long-term conservation of the area to protect its endangered species and ecosystem. Arcadia has supported Tompkins Conservation since 2007, contributing also to the creation of the Patagonia National Park, through land acquisition.
Carolina Morgado, Executive Director of Tompkins Conservation Chile, highlighted: “After the sizable donation we made to the state of Chile, we continue to work for the restoration of complete ecosystems as a strategy to help the planet regain its balance and vitality. This land purchase is part of this work and the National Huemul Corridor, which seeks to promote the conservation of this iconic species and its habitat throughout Patagonia. In Chile, support from international resources is essential, since the country lacks legislation that allows Chileans to donate to conservation projects. ”
Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, co-founders, Arcadia expressed: “Tompkins Conservation’s contribution to the protection of landscapes in Argentina and Chile is outstanding, helping conserve endangered nature for future generations. We are proud to support their efforts. The Huemul Corridor in Cerro Castillo will turn a fragmented landscape into a connected one, where wildlife can move freely, and ecosystems can thrive again.”
These lands will be donated by Tompkins Conservation to the state of Chile in the coming years, both to ensure the long term survival of endangered huemul deer population and to improve access to the park’s emblematic Cerro Castillo trekking circuit via the Las Horquetas valley.
